How to brew kratom tea.
Direct answer
Simmer 2–4g of crushed-leaf or powdered kratom in 10 oz of acidified water (1 tbsp lemon juice) for 20–30 min on low heat, then strain. Gentler on the stomach than toss-and-wash, slightly weaker gram-for-gram (10–20%), longer onset (30–45 min) but smoother.
Equipment
- Saucepan (non-reactive — stainless steel or enamel, not aluminum)
- Fine-mesh strainer + coffee filter or cheesecloth
- Gram scale
- Mason jar for storage
The brewing steps
- Weigh 2–4g kratom powder per serving (scale for multiple servings).
- Acidify 10 oz water per serving with 1 tbsp lemon juice. Lower pH pulls more alkaloids out of the leaf fiber.
- Bring to a simmer — not a rolling boil. Steam rising, small bubbles.
- Add powder and stir. Cover partially.
- Simmer 20–30 min on low. Stir occasionally. Don't reduce more than 1/3.
- Strain through fine mesh, then through a coffee filter. The second strain removes all grit.
- Sweeten or flavor if desired — honey, ginger, chai spices all work.
Why tea vs toss and wash
- Gentler on stomach. The plant fiber is removed. Less nausea.
- Smoother onset. 30–45 min instead of 15–30 min. Peak feels less steep.
- Easier dose control. Brew 3 servings, drink one now, refrigerate the rest.
- Social-friendly. Carrying a thermos is less suspicious than a bag of powder.
Storage
Refrigerated tea keeps 5–7 days in a sealed glass jar. Freezes well in ice-cube trays — pop out 1–2 cubes into a mug of hot water to reheat. Do not leave at room temperature longer than 4 hours; organic material starts to ferment.
FAQ
Is kratom tea weaker than toss and wash?
Typically yes — 10–20% weaker gram-for-gram because water extraction does not fully release all alkaloids from the leaf fiber. To compensate, steep longer or use slightly more powder. The trade-off is smoother onset and less nausea.
Does boiling kratom destroy mitragynine?
No. Mitragynine is thermally stable up to about 150°C / 300°F. Boiling briefly at 100°C is fine. Do not pressure-cook or reduce for hours — prolonged heat can degrade alkaloids.
How long should I simmer?
Start water simmering (not boiling hard), add powder, stir, cover, and simmer on low for 20–30 minutes. Strain through a coffee filter or cheesecloth.
Can I add lemon?
Yes — acidifying with lemon juice is theorized to enhance alkaloid extraction and the citric acid reduces bitterness. Use 1 tbsp lemon juice per 10 oz water, add before simmering.
How long does the tea keep?
Refrigerated in a sealed jar: 5–7 days. Freeze in ice-cube portions for up to 3 months. Tea goes bitter faster than fresh powder.
