How Florida got here
Florida is the historic center of US kava-bar culture and has a correspondingly large kratom retail footprint, particularly in Tampa, St. Petersburg, Orlando, Miami, and Jacksonville. State-level legality has never been seriously threatened; multiple regulation bills have been filed and withdrawn. The one local exception is Sarasota County, which banned kratom in 2014 — one of the earliest local ordinances in the US.
Where to buy in Florida
Widely available. Tampa and St. Pete especially have kratom tea bars that serve brewed kratom in-house. Sarasota County is the one exception — do not purchase or possess in Sarasota County limits.
Local ordinances
Sarasota County
Banned since 2014. Enforcement is active; possession in Sarasota County can result in citation and product confiscation.
Pending legislation
Active bills
HB 179 (2025) proposed a Florida KCPA; bill died in committee. AKA continues lobbying but Florida's free-market retail environment has made a regulated-framework bill a lower priority.
